I am eternally grateful... for my knack of finding in great books, some of them very funny books, reason enough to feel honored to be alive, no matter what else might be going on.

The Art Lesson

AR: 3.6
Lexile: 650

Written and illustrated by
Tomie dePaola
Normal-length Picture Book
Genre: Realistic Fiction

A little boy named Tommy loves to draw, and he can't wait to start school so he can have real art lessons with a real art teacher. He is learning a little from some cousins, who tell him that artists never copy. Imagine his dismay when the art teacher tells him to copy a drawing she is doing on the chalkboard! Fortunately, Tommy and the art teacher figure out a way to solve the problem.

I love this book! I like virtually all Tomie DePaola books and this is one of my favorites. I love reading it to my students but only after I read them Strega Nona, Pancakes for Breakfast, and Bill and Pete. Then they really "get" the ending of this book! Read all these books (they're short) and "get" it, too!
