The Princess and the Frog

Once again, the Disney studios work their magic on a retelling of a traditional fairy tale with wonderful results! This movie is loosely based on a novel, The Frog Princess by E. D. Baker, which is based on the traditional story "The Frog Prince". Each version introduced new elements and made the story more interesting, and this interpretation is the richest of all.

Cirque Du Freak: The Vampire's Assistant

I am not comparing "Cirque du Freak: The Saga of Darren Shan" to "The Lord of the Rings", but there is something to be said for making a long book into a long movie. Director Peter Jackson pretty faithfully interpreted the "Ring" books and came up with a series of awesome movies. He cut out very little, and as a result the movies are long but rich, emotionally moving, and exciting. In turning the "Cirque" books into a movie, screenwriter/director Paul Weitz took an epic young adult 12-book saga and turned it into short, light popcorn movie.

Fantastic Mr. Fox

What happens when you take a classic beloved story and give it to one of Hollywood's most creative, original moviemakers? You get a creative retelling that is charming and original, if not instantly classic. Screenwriter/Director Wes Anderson brings his unique attitude to his retelling of Roald Dahl's story for a very enjoyable movie.

Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs

Making a movie based on a picture book is challenging. Making one based on a picture book without a traditional storyline is even more challenging. Most of the time, the movie and the book have barely more than the title in common. The rest has to be "made-up" by the movie-makers, which can be a good thing, like "Shrek" or "Zathura", or not so good, like "Jumanji" or this movie.

Bridge to Terabithia (2007)

The previews for this beloved movie tried to trick people into thinking it was an adventure movie with lots of special effects. The real "special" effect is going to be the one it has on people who watch.
