Where would you find the following fraction?

Teaching kids how to estimate fractions less than one is a good way of developing the concept of fractional numbers. Initially ask students whether a given fraction is less than, more than, or exactly one-half. Later challenge them to estimate where on the fraction bar a given fraction indicates.

I often use "think-alouds" such as the following to model for my students: "(For the fraction 3/4) I know that 2 is half of 4, so the middle is 2/4. Three is more than two, so I know that 3/4 is more than 2/4."
